Top 5 Applications of Super Absorbent Polymers

Super Absorbent Polymer is a type of macro molecular synthetic water absorbing polymer material. The material is known by many different names such as SAP, hydrogel, absorbent polymers, absorbent gels, super soakers, super slurpers, water gel and many more.
Due   to   their   outstanding   characteristics, super absorbent polymers (SAPs) have been used in many applications such as manufacturing of Healthcare Products, Artificial Snow, Waste Water Treatment and more.

Top 5 Applications of Super Absorbent Polymers

1. Medical Applications
2. Agricultural Applications
3. Strengthening of Concrete
4. Mining and Drilling Waste Solidification
5. Other Applications

1. Medical Applications

SAPs can be used in many medical applications, such as drug delivery systems (DDSs), wound   closure, healing products, removal of body water during surgery (treatment of edema), and surgical implant devices.

SAPs are also used in the health care field to manufacture efficient heating pads.

2. Agricultural Applications

SAPs inside the soil can absorb water from rainfall or excessive irrigation, then releasing it slowly upon the root demand through osmotic pressure difference, resulting in improved growth rate.
They are also used for the controlled release of pesticides and agrochemicals.

3. Strengthening of Concrete

During hydration process, SAPs act as an internal water source to provide the required water. SAPs absorb water molecules from the fresh concrete mixture, then releases it in a later stage if its relative humidity decreases.

SAPs can be used to promote internal curing of concrete; thus, mitigate its autogenous shrinkage.

4. Mining and Drilling Waste Solidification

Oil and gas extraction operations create a variety of liquid waste streams, including drill cuttings and mine tailings that require transportation and disposal. SAPs efficiently solidify that waste without significantly increasing weight or volume to reduce waste transportation and disposal costs.

5. Other Applications

SAPs are also used also such as fire retarders, dewatering of adulterated fuel, artificial snow, athletic garment, ornamental products, sanitary towels and more.

They are also used in other applications, such as building internal decoration, modifying weather conditions, as dehydrating agent to solidify waste in the sludge treatment, absorb alcohol and more.
