Top 5 Applications of Lithium Hydroxide
Lithium hydroxide is an inorganic
compound that is widely utilized in organic synthesis to promote the reaction
due to its strong basicity.
It is a white powder and is
available in two forms: anhydrated and hydrated. The substance has a variety of
uses in submarines, spaceships, battery manufacturing, dyes and many more.

1. Carbon Dioxide Scrubber
Lithium Hydroxide is used in
spaceships and scuba rebreathers to absorb carbon dioxide. It reacts with
carbon dioxide to make lithium carbonate. This prevents people from suffocating
in spaceships or submarines. It is also used to treat exhaust gases from
industrial plants or from exhaled air in life support systems.
2. Grease Thickener
Lithium hydroxide is used in the
manufacturing of lithium salts (soaps) of stearic and other fatty acids. These
soaps are used as grease lubricant thickeners to improve heat resistance, water
resistance, stability and mechanical properties.
3. Battery Manufacturing
Lithium Hydroxide is used as an
electrolyte in batteries. It is used to produce nickel-hydrogen battery,
nickel-cadmium battery, lithium-ion battery and other high-purity lithium
compounds. Lithium Hydroxide batteries are used for various purposes including
Pacemakers, Digital Cameras, Watches, PDAs, Smartphones and many more.
4. Dyes
Lithium hydroxide and Lithium
carbonate are used as an additive for dyestuffs, and fluxing agents in
inorganic pigments. They increase the brilliance of specific pigments. The
substance is also used as a cation for an anionic dye to enhance the
light-fastness of the dye.
5. Other Applications
Lithium hydroxide is used as a
heat transfer medium, and in ceramics and some Portland cement formulations. The
substance is also used to alkalize the reactor coolant in pressurized water
reactors for corrosion control.
