4 Applications of Desiccants
Water can cause major issues in
various industries especially electronics and packaged food industries. It can
cause failures in electronic devices and destroy packaged foods as well. That’s
why there is an increased needs for substances which can absorb water in their
vicinity. One such kind of substances is desiccants. Desiccants are chemical
substances that sustain a state of dryness by absorbing water from surroundings.
Some of the most commonly used desiccants include activated alumina, molecular
sieve, Benzophenone,
Calcium chloride, Calcium oxide, Magnesium sulfate, Potassium carbonate, Potassium hydroxide, Sodium
chlorate, Sodium chloride, etc. Here are some common applications of
desiccants:
1. Water Treatment: Many desiccants especially activated alumina
are considered as the best and cost effective water treatment solutions
available in the market. The desiccants are used in the removal of arsenic
and fluoride from drinking water.
2. Desiccant Air Dryers: Desiccants air dryers are used to remove moisture
from compressed air in many industrial applications. The most commonly used
desiccants air dryers are activated alumina, molecular sieve, etc.
3.
Packaged Food: Packaged food is made so that it can
last for quite some time, however moisture can destroy packaged food and
inedible. That’s why desiccants are used to remove moisture from packaged
foods. Commonly used desiccants include molecular
sieves and clay desiccant.
4.
Pharmaceuticals: Moisture can do a lot of damage during
production and packaging of medicines. To prevent this damage, desiccants are
used to remove the moisture from pharmaceutical products. Most commonly used desiccants
in pharmaceutical industry include Silica
gel, Molecular sieve, etc.
